On January 22, 2026, a solemn Mass was celebrated at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Mississauga, Ont., to mark the 200th anniversary of the approval of the Constitution and Rules of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate – a foundational moment in the life of the Congregation that continues to shape their missionary identity and apostolic commitment.

More than 45 Oblates gathered from various parts of Canada – including parish ministries, formation houses and missionary assignments – creating a visible sign of unity, fraternity and shared charism across generations and missions.

The presence of His Eminence Frank Cardinal Leo, who presided over the Eucharist and delivered the commemorative homily, added a special ecclesial and pastoral significance to this historic celebration. Joined by parishioners, friends of the Oblates and members of the local community, the Oblates gave thanks for two centuries of faithful service to the Church, especially among the poor and most abandoned, and renewed their commitment to carry forward the missionary spirit of Saint Eugene de Mazenod in the context of today’s world.

“Remember the past with gratitude, live the present with enthusiasm, and look forward to the future with confidence.” Quoting the words of St. John Paul II from his Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte, Cardinal Leo invited the Oblates and the gathered faithful to reflect deeply on the legacy entrusted to the Congregation.

He emphasized that gratitude anchors the order in God’s saving work throughout history, enthusiasm fuels the present missionary zeal, and confidence in the future flows from trust in the Holy Spirit who continues to guide the Church. His words served as both an affirmation of the Oblates’ past witness and a call to renewed fidelity, creativity and courage in responding to the pastoral and missionary needs of our time.
